What is Buffy’s?

Buffy’s is a book club hosted by me, Lizzy Hadfield, in bars and restaurants between London and New York and online on this Substack.

I wanted to create a book club that fits in with my own life and interests outside of reading.  Books have been the foundation of so many aspects of my life; from downtime, to the feeling of company when travelling alone and more recently a way to meet new people and make new friends. 

Buffy’s will be a place to come and connect with new people and talk about that month’s book over a great glass of wine or mocktail and, when possible, over a delicious meal in either London or New York.

Real life events

At the beginning of each month, Buffy’s will announce on Instagram the location of that month’s book club and the book we will be reading.  A very limited number of tickets will be available, the cost of which will vary month to month depending on which restaurant/bar it is hosted in and if it is an evening including dinner or just drinks.

The monthly book clubs will always be intimate, with a maximum of 15 tickets available each time. While I realise this might mean lots of people won’t be able to get a ticket each month, I felt it important to keep the groups small so people can really have a chance to meet one another and feel comfortable enough to speak up and share their thoughts on the book.

Of course, we hope the Buffy’s community will grow into the digital space too.  If you didn’t manage to get a ticket but still want to participate in a conversation around the book, this Substack is the place to do so, free of charge.  Equally, if you did come to an event and want to connect with the people you met there, or share your experience, I would love to hear about that in the chat too!

There will be a free quarterly newsletter to subscribe to, where I will recap what has been happening at the Buffy’s events and give you a chance to share some written reviews about what else you have been reading.

The primary space of this Substack is the chat section.

I want this to be a constant discussion about reading, about what new places have opened in your city that would be great to take a book to, about your favourite sentences in your favourite book.  Really, about absolutely anything related to reading.

I will share a recap of what was discussed at the book club to kickstart a conversation, but other than that it can be as free-flowing as you like.
